“You won’t find another musician as agile and reckless as DJ /rupture.” — Mary Ann Hobbes, BBC1
DJ Rupture is a border-crossing bass visionary. His dynamic live sets simultaneously partyrock and suggest complex political undertones. He’s performed in more than 30 countries, released records on Soul Jazz & Tigerbeat6, DJ’ed in a band with Norah Jones, done two John Peel Sessions, and was turntable soloist with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. In 2012 Rupture made most of his mixtapes available for free – you can get them here. A four-star review in VIBE Magazine praised his highly influential 2001 mix Gold Teeth Thief as a “stunning, globe-trotting, three-turntable mix” that “captures the spirit of the best bootleg mixes–bumping, brash, and without borders.” The New York Times calls Rupture “a thoughtful pipeline for music from countless distant and obscure outposts.”
For over 5 years Rupture hosted a weekly radio show on NYC-area FM station WFMU. Past guests include Das Racist, Venus X, Paul Chan, and Kalup Linzy. You can podcast and stream approximately 300 hours of archives. Rupture’s show was re-broadcast on FM stations in Belgium, France, Germany, and Croatia.
Rupture plays in a band called Nettle — violin, cello, electronics, banjo, guembri, voice. In 2011 they released an album on Sub Rosa. Check out their video from Tangiers, Morocco. Rupture does duo performances with guitarist Andy Moor (The Ex). Matt Shadetek & Rupture joined forces in 2008 to create Dutty Artz, a label and crew based in New York City.
