…TO BE CONTINUED

touristinfo

In this young new global underground dance whatever scene we’re in I think that we really need to make sure that if we’re gonna engage in a style that we’re doing it on all levels, not just formal (wow this beat pattern is great, I’m gonna put my euro synth bass on it and call it ‘global-fusion’) but on the levels of slang, culture, meaning, people, relationships, beef and history. And some may say: “But it’s too much work to learn all these languages, and I’m on the other side of the world and blee blah bleh” well then I’d say either make some friends who can teach you or maybe you should focus in on something that you can understand and try to develop some depth in it. Basically, not being a tourist is hard work but I think, worth it.Matt Shadetek

COLOMBIA UNDERSCORE ZERO FOUR

[audio:colombia_04.mp3]

Nuevo artista – ill joyous accordeon 04

i dont know, afro-colombian, this is my metadata, anything else ask Sonido Inca.

i purchased two 12″ records in London – neither with any artwork, just a cheap one-color center label in a white paper sleeve – and it cost me USD $33.

I also met with one music lawyer, whose wide-set eyes are blue and turn hypnotic when I say “this is complicated” and she says, “no, it isn’t.”

Elsewhere, Lamin “adds zest and balance“, not to mention context, to my Balla post.

Simon Sellars at Ballardian offers a great response to me asking Kode9 about J.G. Ballard on my recent radio show.

plus, moroccan/algerian fans, don’t miss last week’s show with MS Pilot’s regasba mix!

mudd up!

SNOWTIME

several people have asked so sure: if you want me to re-post any MP3, now is the time.

leave a re-up request in the comment section & i’ll see what i can do. (Mind you my laptop died a few months ago, taking lots of audio with it.)

UNCLE TOM’S RUMBA

OK, so it’s not that Uncle Tom. We’re talking Tío Tom, legendary Cuban rumbero whose music is celebrated on a new Smithsonian CD

puntilla

Rumba, sticks & poetry;

as the free liner notes (PDF) say “The rumba was born in Cuba out of a fusion of African traditions, and it dates back to the colonial era, when there was dancing and playing of music in the barracks of slave plantations… With only voices and varied percussion (cajones ‘boxes’, drums, sticks, spoons), its polyrhythm, vocal nuances, and musical structures turned out to be complex, though flexible.”

who trusts things which are complex and not flexible?

Puntilla y el Conjunto Todo Rumbero – Mi Tierra (My Land)

This is the Smithsonian’s third notable nu-world latin release of 2008; the others involve very fast vallenato (Ayombe) and even faster, insanely fast merengue típico /perico ripiao (La India Canela), the stuff that Carolina wrote on a few days ago (which can also be found towards the end of Geko Jones’ wow-analysis of a minimal synth driven pedophiliac mambo tune from DR and what that has to do with the price of milk in rural Hispanola and interweb editorializing).

Check Esquina Rumbera for more on the Afro-Cuba style.

FRIDAY RU NI FU NI FA

“I was posing [nude] like this.”

“Oh, that’s good.”

“Yeah but this is America. People will think the worst of me.”

Ni fu ni fa…”

. . . .

Tego Calderón – Ni Fu Ni Fa (from El Abayarde Contra-Ataca)

El Abayarde

. . . .

This Friday, I will be DJing at the massive WFMU Record Fair in Manhattan. 8-10pm. Many hard-to-find records in one place. I’ll probably spin cumbia / north african tunes.

BELATED ZINN DAY

in Paris, and the apartment here has Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, which is good, since i wanted to blog its memorable opening yesterday (the holiday of Columbus Day in America):

…When Columbus and his sailors came ashore, carrying swords, speaking oddly, the Arawaks ran to greet them, brought them food, water, gifts. He later wrote of this in his log:

They willingly traded everything they owned. . . . They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features. . . . They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are made of cane. . . . They would make fine servants. . . . With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.

And so it began. “We could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.”

one can find several discs from Buda Musique’s Ethiopiques series, plus Manu Chao’s new album – which happens to be his least interesting – dwnldable here. [via ] Chocoreve (I dream of chocolate).

Mp3 blog as library. Weird little broken libraries. you take the book and dont ever have to give it back.

speaking of Ethiopiques, here’s a track from vol. 17 . I dare you to find a more soulful out-of-tune piano number.
